It’s not that I haven’t had something to say, but there’s been too much to talk about. I just didn’t make time to blog about it.
I must start somewhere, so I’ll start with this past weekend’s events. I participated in the 2013 Disney Princess Half Marathon at Walt Disney World. My third Princess Half Marathon, and 9th overall half marathon, it was my most physically challenging. I had a hysterectomy on November 28th and wasn’t released for exercise until January 21st. Somewhere in the third mile I started to feel a pain in my left hip. By mile nine, the pain was unbearable. For the first time, simply willing myself to finish wasn’t enough. My body was shutting down.
General consensus is that I pulled my hamstring. When severely inflamed, they tell me it affects the sciatica. I was wearing fairly new sneakers (Mizunos) and not much training, which apparently is not a good combination. However, my blister issue at the back of the heel, I cannot explain. My socks haven’t changed, but I had to stop three times to adjust my socks and I still hurt myself.
All that said, I had a great time. There just isn’t anything like running at Disney! Characters along the track, entertainment and plenty of hydration and medic tents.
We stayed at one of the official race resorts, Caribbean Beach Resort. It was new to us, we’ve never stayed there before. We absolutely loved the pirate-themed rooms. The main pool was themed like a Spanish fortress with a kiddie water play area made out of a ‘marooned pirate ship’.
I celebrated my personal triumph with a special lunch with the Princesses at the Princess Storybook Dining at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall in the Norway Pavilion at Epcot Center. It wasn’t my first or even second choice. I would have loved to eat at the new Beauty & Beast Themed restaurant at the Magic Kingdom or at the Castle, but we had a fabulous time at the Akershus. When we entered to be seated, a picture was taken of me with Belle. Before we left, we where given an 8×10 and 4 4×6 prints at no additional charge. Present for autographs and pictures were Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Princess Ariel (Little Mermaid), Snow White and Cinderella. A pricey experience at $46.99 per person, it was the perfect way to celebrate my third Princess Half Marathon!
